Employing his most versatile generative algorithm at the time, Tyler Hobbs created Fidenza in 2021, a series comprised of 999 algorithmically-generated works produced by a single algorithm without any form of curation. Fidenza #575 is a core example of Hobbs' work with flow fields, an algorithmic technique he popularised to produce surprising, organic curves with a precise, harmonious flow. The work strikes a delicate balance between structure and randomness as traits, such as colour, scale, and turbulence, vary to create a wide variety of outcomes while still maintaining a cohesive character as a collection. By applying a generative methodology to his art practice, it’s not only the computer that follows a set of rules but Hobbs himself - allowing his body of work to emerge at the forefront of the Generative Art movement.
